It dawns upon her that he has become a bad emotional habit. Her call history is undeniable proof that she FaceTimes him whenever she doesn't want to talk to anyone, when she wants to forget about feeling low or anxious. While she regrets sharing too much every single time, she is still drawn to the absurdity of their relationship. "Let's go to Vegas," she suggests as a joke when he asks what he should do to celebrate his box office numbers. "I want to waste your dino money," she teases, making a silly face at him as she unsuccessfully tries to keep the misery from seeping into her voice. She thinks she's fooling him, or she wants to think she is. There are still 24 more hours left in this desert getaway, and she feels trapped with a stranger who only hours before had not been a stranger. She remembers she is hopelessly terrible at breakups and goodbyes. "I don't want to be here anymore," she confesses pitifully. "I get back tomorrow. Can we really go to Vegas?" The truth is: it isn't really just about his success - there's that too. She's immensely proud of him, though she doesn't say it. But it's also about how much she doesn't want to be in the desert, staring into the darkness while silence and intangible distance settle uncomfortably. "Sure," he agrees, "but you're not gonna try and marry me, right?" She laughs genuinely, glad she called after all.

For the first time in two and a half weeks, she is alone - truly alone. It terrifies her to know there is nothing and no one between her brain and her thoughts. There is no distraction, no excuse to smile and laugh. When she's alone, she's forced to see herself as she is: hypocritical, contradictory, and inconsistent. She lives multiple lives simultaneously and it exhausts her. When there's no one left to entertain, her lives collapse like cards. Knowing no other solution, she books the first flight out of Los Angeles in the morning and runs as far as she can.

"IMO, Imo! Imo!" The chanting continues, dipping into sing-song territory as the little terror known as her four-year-old nephew finds new ways to entertain himself. "Wake up, Imo! Let's play! Let's play!" She groans, rolling over to see a jelly-covered smile inches from her face. "Omo! Nicky-yah, what are you doing? You're a mess! Why is Umma letting you run around like this?" She scolds fondly, reaching aimlessly for the box of tissues somewhere off to the right. Armed with her weapon, she attacks in a cleaning frenzy, wiping his breakfast from his face before he gets the idea to smother her with kisses. "What time is it?" She asks to no one in particular, fumbling for her phone. Too damn early, that's what it was. "Imo, Imo! Want to see something? Come see it!" He begins to tug at her free hand. Cute as he is, she is grateful for the thousandth time this is temporary, that at 33 she is still childless. Birth control. Must remember to continue taking the pill.

She lays on the floor, head on a pillow, her hair arranged haphazardly to frame her face. It's a lazy sort of Saturday, and they've abandoned their superficial coffee plans in favor of the quiet studio. He strums his guitar, slowly soothing away the awkwardness as they conduct an experiment. "Do you hear the difference?" He asks, his curiosity palpable. She shakes her head furiously and laughs; if she didn't know it before, she knows now that she has no future as a musician. "Do it again," she demands, and he obliges. Maybe she doesn't hear it, but maybe she just wants to hear him play for her.

She hates goodbyes. As she stands with her arms looped around his waist, her head against his chest, she remembers that she hates goodbyes. She isn't sure why she forgets that regularly, maybe because she's usually too inundated by the thrill of hello. This particular farewell haunts her for days; it weighs down her soul. "What exactly are you waiting for?" Her sister asks over dinner one night. "What do you think will magically happen in a month or two? You either want it or you don't, so why drag this out?" The waitress interrupts to refill their half-empty glasses, and she takes advantage of the break in conversation. "I don't really know," she admits, "but I'm tired of waking up alone."

She isn't sure why she'd been so scared, why she'd balked so much at coming back. She thinks she might even be having fun, she might have missed working at home in Seoul. Before she can begin to doubt her own thoughts, Mina interrupts, opening the car door. "Unnie, Director Lee wants to speak with you," Mina says. "Nothing to worry about, he wants to talk about today's scenes." She nods, smiles even. It throws Mina off for half a second before she quickly recovers and retreats. Maybe she should stay in Korea after all. What did the US industry have for her anyway? A bunch of forgettable, barely present sideline supporting nobodies. At least here in Seoul, she would always be the leading lady, the heroine, someone worth remembering. She conveniently forgets the media backlash, the criticisms, the unhappiness and restlessness. For now she lives in a vacuum. Everyone, herself included, is simply happy to see her home.

"Noona, I put in my transfer papers," he says, "so if all things go well, I'll be gone by the end of the year and you can finally have your condo back." She tries to be happy for her younger brother, but musters only a practiced smile. In three short years, she's grown attached to his presence around her home. They spend most of their lives growing up apart in two different countries; he is 11 by the time she leaves for Seoul, and 26 when he moves in with her after he's been stationed in Korea. Stay with me, she'd proposed, I've got spare rooms and I'm gone for half the year anyway. It'll be good for someone to be there when I'm not. She is surprised when he agrees, because they are near strangers tied together by a surname, but she is grateful all the same to have a tie back to the family she'd left behind in the US. "Where will you go next?" she asks. "New Zealand, I hope. San Diego, maybe," he says with a shrug. "I'll miss Korea though. It's been good." She smiles fondly at her baby brother, ruffling his hair the way she did a long time ago. Sadness creeps into her heart as she recognizes a forgotten crave for family. She'd wanted so badly so long ago to be close to them. She is happy for him, but he is still leaving and she will be alone again.
